In memory of Petey    August 2004 - December 11, 2006

You can't tell by looking at these pictures of Petey that he had kidney failure and a poor prognosis.  He was born the runt of the litter and was always small.  When he stopped growing, we worried about him and discovered that his kidneys weren't functioning well.   Some of the vets working on him told us there was no hope, but Petey didn't agree with that.  He was a happy, lively puppy with a strong will to live, and he never realized that he was sick. He loved to play with his toys, take walks, do tricks, and join in and "help" with whatever his foster mom is doing. His great attitude and joy in life lasted until the end.

Petey gave us the gift of a miracle two years.   Petey's kidneys were on their way out January 2006 with a creatinine of 8.  We almost put him down that weekend, but in desperation we decided to give him fluids and antibiotics to help with his irritated pancreas.  Long story short, he stayed on antibiotics ever since and remarkably, his creatinine just kept plummeting.  In September 2005 he started having isolated seizures.  That didn't bode well, but we'd given up on him before and were proved wrong.  However, in the second week of December 2006, his seizures escalated.  On December 10, 2006, he could no longer walk.  Because it was a Sunday, we spent his last day at home enjoying each other.  Next morning, he woke up after a peaceful night of sleep and he was no longer himself.  It was time for Petey to move on to the next world, so we said goodbye to Petey the morning of December 11, 2006.  There was not a dry eye in the veterinarian's office.

Thanks to you all for supporting Petey's veterinary care and allowing the world to enjoy this bright spirit for two whole years.  When I agreed to take this sick puppy into foster care in April 2005, I had no idea what a special privilege that would be.  I also want to relay my personal thank you for  not only sending your donations but your love, prayers and healing thoughts to this special little dog.

Am I cute, or what????

The GirlFriend Fund

The Road Home K9 Rescue has started an endowment fund to support the veterinary care of these collies in perpetuity.  The new adoptive owners have taken them on despite many having serious health problems as a legacy of their neglect and abuse.  They will need help with the potentially large veterinary bills.  Many need your help now!  See their stories by clicking here.
