The GirlFriend Fund

An endowment to support the collies with health problems

In memory of GirlFriend who left us on May 5, 2005

GirlFriend was one of the oldest dogs confiscated and she was in the worst physical shape.  Here is her picture right after she was cleaned up and given a "puppy cut" to rid her of her heavy coat, full of foxtails, covering numerous skin lesions.  You can see her crusty nose, which is that way because of her discoid lupus.

GirlFriend died after her lupus went systemic, less than a year after she was released for adoption, in May of 2005.  She was adopted by her foster mom, because who would want such a decrepit old dog, suffering from legions of physical problems?  Her skin was covered from lesions arising from her lupus. She had such outrageous spondylosis that she couldn't bend her spine to defecate so it was hard for her to keep clean. To make matters worse, she suffered from inflammatory bowel disease.  She was so weak in the hindquarters from years of confinement that she could barely walk.  Her teeth were worn to nubs or entirely gone from chewing on her constantly itchy skin.  Her body was disfigured from dog fights and from having had countless litters of puppies.

The Road Home K9 Rescue has begun an endowment fund for the Yolo County Collies and named it in GirlFriend's honor.

Donations to this fund will allow The Road Home to support these dogs for the rest of their lives.  Many, like GirlFriend, will be plagued by health problems from their poor breeding and the neglect that they suffered for as long as they live.  Many have immune system problems like GirlFriend.  Many have hip dysplasia and untreated orthopedic injuries.  They have been adopted by people who love them anyway.  This endowment fund will support the adoptive homes who will otherwise have to bear the burden of excessive veterinary costs to keep the dogs healthy and comfortable.

GirlFriend's beauty still could shine through.   GirlFriend in the kennel, in her former life.

GirlFriend was an amazing dog.  She was packed with personality and was a deeply intelligent dog.  She had suffered great abuse without ever losing her sense of self or her rich character.  She knew who she was.  Even at a likely 10 years old, she was as playful as a puppy.  She loved her daily walks, which she chugged along dragging her two nearly useless hind legs.  She had an opinion about everything.  She lived entirely in the present, embracing each day.  Her spirit never diminished until her last few days.  The systemic lupus was destroying every cell in her body.  Her mind was as sharp as a tack until the end however.  She made it clear that she was ready to go, so we released her from her worn out body on May 5, 2005.

GirlFriend in all of her glory

When GirlFriend smiled, you could see her toothless mouth with framed by the 4 pegs of her former canine teeth.  She looked like a hippopotamus but she never lost her dignity.
